Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung reiterated the city’s commitment to sustainable development as part of its ambition to join the world’s top 50 global cities by 2030 during his address at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday.

In his remarks, Pramono outlined Jakarta’s efforts to mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into local policies and programs.

“As Jakarta’s role evolves into that of a global city, our steps toward sustainable development become crucial,” Pramono told the forum on Thursday. “Jakarta aims to be among the world’s top 50 global cities by 2030, a target that requires us to compete with other leading cities.”

Jakarta currently ranks 74th out of 156 cities in the 2024 Kearney Global Cities Index. This year’s top 10 include New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Singapore.

Pramono highlighted several achievements by the Jakarta Provincial Government across sectors, including health, women’s safety, community empowerment, and cross-sector collaboration, as part of its push toward sustainable development.

“This requires fundamental changes in urban attractiveness, infrastructure provision, bureaucratic transformation, political support, transparent public communication, and the quality of human resources,” Pramono said. “Our sustainable development efforts are shaping Jakarta into a global city aligned with our 2030 agenda.”

The governor reaffirmed Jakarta’s commitment to gender equality, stressing the city’s initiatives to create safe and inclusive public spaces for women.

“In 2024, Jakarta recorded the lowest gender inequality index nationwide, supported by initiatives such as women-only buses, anti-harassment campaigns on TransJakarta buses, and extended operating hours for city parks equipped with improved lighting and supervision,” Pramono noted.

Concluding his address, Pramono called for stronger cross-sector collaboration to ensure Jakarta’s progress as a resilient and inclusive global city.

“Let us position Jakarta as a pioneer of resilient, inclusive, and globally integrated national development,” he said. “Jakarta must be a place where everyone has space, and no one is left behind.”

The HLPF 2025 is being held from July 14 to 23 under the theme “Advancing Sustainable, Inclusive and Evidence-Based Solutions for the 2030 Agenda with No One Left Behind.” A total of 37 countries, including Indonesia, are presenting their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), showcasing achievements, challenges, and best practices in implementing the SDGs across sectors and government levels.
