Jakarta. Indonesia experienced 4,071 earthquakes in August 2025, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Of the total, 21 quakes had magnitudes above 5.0, while the remaining 4,050 were below that threshold. Most were minor and went unfelt by residents.

“Earthquakes below magnitude 5.0 dominated, and only a small number were felt by the public,” BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Director, Daryono, said in a statement on Saturday. “From thousands of quakes, 90 were felt, and three of them caused damage.”

The three damaging events included a magnitude 6.3 quake in Sarmi, Papua, on August 12; a magnitude 5.8 quake in Poso, Central Sulawesi, on August 17; and a magnitude 4.7 quake in Karawang, West Java, on August 20.

Daryono urged the public to rely only on official information, warning against unverified claims of earthquake predictions.

“Those who truly understand seismology are very cautious and would never make predictions in public,” he said. “Ironically, those who lack knowledge are often the ones making such claims.”

Indonesia is one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations, sitting at the convergence of multiple tectonic plates. The country frequently records thousands of earthquakes each year.
