Jakarta. Indonesia is aiming to host the Summer Olympics in 2036. This ambition was conveyed during a meeting between President-elect Prabowo Subianto and IOC President Thomas Bach in Paris on Sunday.

Prabowo was joined by State-Owned Enterprises Minister and Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir. According to Thohir, Prabowo's goal is to position Indonesia as a premier destination for world-class events. "We presented Indonesia's potential to host international sports events in the future, including the Olympics," Thohir posted on Instagram on Sunday.

The Paris 2024 Olympics began on July 26 and will run until August 11. Indonesia is participating with 29 athletes across 12 sports this year.

Other countries expressing interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics include Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and India. The IOC plans to select the host city after 2025.

Los Angeles, USA, will host the 2028 Olympics, while Brisbane, Australia, is set to host the 2032 Games.

Thohir highlighted Indonesia’s track record of hosting major events, including the World Superbike and MotoGP at Mandalika, the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, the 2022 ASEAN Para Games in Solo, the 2023 U-17 World Cup in Jakarta, and the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Jakarta.

"Mr. Prabowo’s passion for sports drives his vision to see Indonesia as a host of global events," Thohir wrote.

Prabowo Subianto, who will assume the presidency in October from Joko Widodo (Jokowi), had previously expressed Indonesia's Olympic hosting aspirations during the G-20 Summit in Bali in November 2022. At that time, Jokowi declared the country's readiness to host the 2036 Olympics in the new capital city Nusantara (IKN), which is under development to replace Jakarta as the administrative capital, with completion planned for 2045.

Following the G-20 Summit 2022, the IOC confirmed Indonesia’s inclusion in the continuous dialogue phase of the bidding process, as reported by GamesBids.com, an independent site covering Olympic bidding information. As part of this phase, an Indonesian delegation with observer status will visit the Paris Olympics and monitor preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, according to GamesBids.com.
