Breaking: Train Collision in Greater Jakarta Leaves Passengers Injured, Rescue Efforts Ongoing
Jakarta. A collision between a commuter train and a long-distance passenger train in Bekasi, part of Greater Jakarta, on Monday night left multiple passengers injured, with rescue operations continuing amid reports of people trapped inside damaged carriages.
The accident involved a commuter line train (KRL) and the Argo Bromo Anggrek service traveling from Jakarta to Surabaya, East Java. It occurred at around 8:52 p.m. local time near East Bekasi Station, a busy rail corridor in the greater Jakarta area.
Initial footage circulating on social media showed severe damage to one of the commuter train’s carriages, particularly a women-only section, where several passengers appeared trapped and were seen signaling for help.
State rail operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) said evacuation efforts were ongoing, with emergency teams working alongside police and other authorities to rescue passengers and secure the site.
“As of now, KAI and the police are continuing evacuation efforts and assisting victims at the scene,” said Franoto Wibowo, public relations manager of KAI's Jakarta office.
Authorities temporarily cut overhead electric power along the affected Cibitung–East Bekasi line to ensure safety during rescue operations. Witnesses said the evacuation was challenging due to heavily twisted metal, requiring responders to cut through parts of the train.
Victims have been transported to nearby hospitals, including Bekasi Regional Hospital, where emergency units were reportedly overwhelmed. Many of the injured were women returning home from work, with some suffering fractures, according to initial reports.
The full extent of casualties and the cause of the collision remain under investigation.
KAI apologized for the incident and said its immediate priority is ensuring the safety and treatment of passengers and crew, while coordinating with authorities to manage the aftermath.
The collision has disrupted rail services in and around Bekasi, a key commuter hub serving the Jakarta metropolitan region, as officials continue efforts to clear the tracks and restore operations.
