Bekasi. The death toll from the collision between the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and a commuter line at East Bekasi Station in West Java on Monday night has risen to 16 as of Wednesday, after a critically injured patient died following surgery at a regional hospital.

The latest fatality was among patients treated at RSUD dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid, where dozens of victims remain under care. Hospital director Ellya Niken Prastiwi said 22 injured patients are still being treated, including three in intensive care.

“One patient in the ICU died after undergoing surgery,” Ellya said, adding that the hospital has now recorded four deaths linked to the accident.

In total, authorities have identified 54 victims, comprising 16 fatalities, three patients referred to other facilities, 21 still undergoing treatment, and 26 who have been discharged.

The collision, which occurred late Monday near Bekasi Timur Station, has prompted a coordinated response from both regional and national authorities, with a focus on medical support and safety investigations.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said the provincial government would fully cover the medical expenses of all victims. In addition, the administration has allocated Rp20 billion ($1.15 million) in stimulus funding to upgrade facilities at hospitals treating the injured.

“We are providing support to ensure hospitals can improve their services going forward,” Dedi said.

Financial assistance is also being extended directly to victims and their families. Patients still undergoing treatment will receive Rp10 million each to help cover household needs during recovery, particularly for those unable to work. Families of those who died have been granted Rp50 million in compensation.

“Those who are injured may not be able to work for some time. We want to ensure their families remain supported and their children can continue their education,” Dedi said.

Preliminary findings suggest the crash was triggered by a series of events beginning at a level crossing in the Bulak Kapal area. According to state railway company KAI’s Jakarta spokesman, Franoto Wibowo, a taxi collided with a Jakarta-bound commuter train (KRL), forcing it to stop on the tracks. Another train heading to Cikampek also halted alongside the Jakarta-bound train.

Moments later, the intercity Argo Bromo Anggrek, traveling on the same line, struck the Cikampek-bound commuter train from behind.
