Bekasi, W. Java. A deadly train collision near East Bekasi Station on Monday night has left seven people dead and at least 81 injured, state railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) said on Tuesday, as authorities continue rescue efforts and investigate the cause of the accident.

The company’s president director, Bobby Rasyidin, confirmed the updated casualty figures during a press briefing at the station, stating that all injured victims have been evacuated and are receiving treatment at multiple hospitals across Bekasi.

“Seven people have died and 81 others were injured,” Bobby said, adding that victims are being treated at facilities including Primaya Hospital Bekasi, Bekasi City General Hospital, Bella Hospital, and Mitra Keluarga Hospital.

Emergency responders have set up a command post at Bekasi Timur Station to coordinate victim assistance, provide information to families, and support the recovery of train operations following the disruption.

Preliminary findings suggest the crash was triggered by a series of events beginning at a level crossing in the Bulak Kapal area. According to state railway company KAI’s Jakarta spokesman, Franoto Wibowo, a taxi collided with a Jakarta-bound commuter train (KRL), forcing it to stop on the tracks. Another train heading to Cikampek also halted alongside the Jakarta-bound train.

Moments later, the intercity Argo Bromo Anggrek, traveling on the same line, struck the Cikampek-bound commuter train from behind.

“The commuter train stopped after being hit by a taxi at a crossing near Bulak Kapal. Then the Argo Bromo train approached from behind and collided with it,” Franoto said.

Authorities are continuing evacuation operations and a formal investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and contributing factors.
