Jakarta. Indonesia’s state-owned railway operator KAI’s East Java regional unit has added an extra Surabaya-Jakarta train on Monday as passenger demand rises amid potential flight disruptions from Juanda Airport following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

The additional service, operating on the Surabaya Pasarturi-Gambir route, is scheduled to depart Surabaya Pasarturi Station at 2:10 p.m. Jakarta time on Monday and head to Gambir Station in Central Jakarta.

KAI’s East Java regional spokesperson, Mahendro Trang Bawono, said the additional train was part of the company’s efforts to provide an alternative mode of transport amid the situation.

“The additional Surabaya Pasarturi-Gambir train scheduled to depart today consists of three executive-class coaches and six economy-class coaches, providing a total of 582 seats,” Mahendro said Monday.

KAI Operational Area 8 Surabaya expects passenger traffic to Jakarta and surrounding areas to rise at three major stations: Surabaya Gubeng, Malang and Surabaya Pasarturi.

“On weekdays, around 6,000 passengers usually depart for Jakarta and surrounding areas. Today, however, around 7,000 passengers are departing from stations across Daop 8 Surabaya for Jakarta and its surroundings,” he said.

The additional service comes even though there has been no official announcement of flight cancellations from Juanda Airport to Jakarta.

KAI urged passengers to monitor the latest travel information and check train schedules before departure. Tickets are available through the Access by KAI app, KAI’s official website and other authorized sales channels.

“KAI will continue to provide the best service and adjust operations as necessary, while continuing to prioritize travel safety,” Mahendro said.
