Jakarta. A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Banyuwangi, East Java, on Thursday afternoon, sending tremors across several provinces, including Bali and West Nusa Tenggara.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the quake occurred at 4:04 p.m. local time, with an epicenter located 46 kilometers east of Banyuwangi at a depth of 12 kilometers. The agency confirmed the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning.

The tremor was widely felt in East Java’s Surabaya, Banyuwangi, and Situbondo, as well as in Bali’s Kuta, Denpasar, and Buleleng. Residents in Mataram and West Lombok also reported shaking.

BMKG urged the public to remain vigilant. “Be cautious of potential aftershocks,” the agency said in a statement.

Residents took to social media to share their experiences. One user in South Denpasar wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “The shaking lasted quite a while. I ran out of the house in panic.”

Another Bali resident posted: “I felt it clearly. I was lying down when the tremor hit and had to rush outside.”

The quake was also felt as far as Malang in East Java. “At first I thought I had a migraine, but then I realized everything was shaking,” one resident wrote online. Another said household items swayed during the tremor.

As of Thursday evening, authorities reported no immediate damage or casualties.
