Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) expects tsunami waves to reach parts of eastern Indonesia this afternoon, following a powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday.

The earthquake occurred at 6:24 a.m. Western Indonesia Time, at a shallow depth of 18 kilometers. According to Daryono, Head of BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, the quake was triggered by subduction activity at the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench and exhibited a thrust fault mechanism commonly associated with tsunami generation.

Although the epicenter lies outside Indonesian territory, BMKG’s modeling indicates potential tsunami waves under 0.5 meters in height may reach several coastal areas, prompting the agency to issue an early warning with alert status for the following regions:

  • Talaud Islands – 2:52 p.m. Central Indonesia Time

  • Gorontalo City – 4:39 p.m. Central Indonesia Time

  • North Halmahera – 4:04 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

  • Manokwari – 4:08 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

  • Raja Ampat – 4:18 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

  • Biak Numfor – 4:21 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

  • Supiori – 4:21 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

  • Northern Sorong – 4:24 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

  • Jayapura – 4:30 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

  • Sarmi – 4:30 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time

Daryono urged residents in affected coastal regions to remain calm, stay away from the shoreline, and wait for official updates from BMKG.

As of 8:30 a.m. Jakarta time, BMKG had recorded seven aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 5.4 to 6.9. While tectonic activity remains active in the region, Daryono noted that “there are no significant tsunami signals directed toward Indonesia at this time.”

BMKG also warned the public to avoid hoaxes and disinformation circulating on social media and to refer only to official sources for the latest developments.
