Flores Earthquake: 2,119 Aftershocks Recorded as BMKG Warns of Weeks of Shaking
Jakarta. Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, continues to experience intense seismic activity after Saturday’s M7.7 earthquake, with Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG)< recording 2,119 aftershocks as of Tuesday at 5 a.m. Jakarta time. The agency warns the sequence could continue for another three to four weeks.
The aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 1.3 to 6.2. Twenty-four measured above magnitude 5, while 70 were felt by residents.
“Based on preliminary data, these aftershocks are expected to end within the next three to four weeks,” BMKG Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Wijayanto said in a statement Tuesday.
The main earthquake was caused by tectonic activity along the Flores Back-Arc, with an upward thrust fault mechanism. BMKG issued a tsunami warning just 2 minutes and 16 seconds after the earthquake, covering parts of East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi at alert and advisory levels.
The warning was lifted about 2.5 hours after it was issued.
Tide-gauge observations confirmed tsunami activity at 16 locations across four provinces. The highest wave, measuring 1.6 meters, was recorded in Pota, East Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, while the lowest, at 0.14 meters, was recorded in Bakalang, Alor, East Nusa Tenggara.
The earthquake and tsunami caused significant damage across East Nusa Tenggara, particularly in West Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Sikka and Maumere. Preliminary data showed 53 people were killed and 137 others injured.
To support the recovery effort, BMKG has deployed joint teams from its headquarters and technical units to affected areas. The teams are conducting macroseismic surveys, microtremor and MASW measurements, monitoring aftershocks and verifying the tsunami's impact in the field.
“BMKG has deployed joint teams from its headquarters and technical units to conduct surveys of the destructive earthquake, including macroseismic surveys, microtremor and MASW measurements to assess ground characteristics and its response to shaking, aftershock monitoring, and field verification of the tsunami impact,” Wijayanto said.
The surveys will support post-disaster reconstruction, microzonation mapping and recommendations for disaster mitigation in affected areas.
As aftershocks are expected to continue for several more weeks, BMKG urged residents to remain calm while staying alert. Residents were advised to stay away from buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake to reduce the risk of collapse during further shaking.
BMKG said it would continue providing updates on seismic activity and post-earthquake conditions, urging residents to follow official information from the agency and instructions from authorities in the field.
