Denpasar, Bali. Authorities in Bali have issued the highest-level weather warning as days of relentless rain triggered widespread flooding, landslide risk, and dangerous sea conditions across the island, disrupting daily life in Denpasar and several major tourist areas.

Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) Region III in Denpasar warned that moderate to extreme rainfall is expected to continue from Feb. 24 to Feb. 26, with alerts ranging from yellow (watch) to red (extreme) across most regencies and cities.

Forecaster Putu Agus Dedy Permana said the red-level alert — indicating very heavy to extreme rainfall — was issued Tuesday for Badung, Tabanan, Gianyar, Klungkung, Karangasem, and Denpasar. Jembrana, Bangli, and Buleleng were placed under a high-risk warning.

Strong winds were also forecast for coastal and lowland areas, including Denpasar, Badung, Buleleng, Karangasem, Klungkung, and Gianyar, with wind speeds reaching up to 45 kilometers per hour. Wave heights in southern Bali waters were expected to reach up to four meters on Tuesday, easing slightly to three meters on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the alert is expected to shift, with Denpasar, Badung, Tabanan, Gianyar, and Klungkung under high-risk warnings, while other regions remain on watch. Elevated risk conditions are forecast to persist through Thursday.

Popular tourist destinations including Nusa Dua, Kuta, Tanah Lot, Sanur, Ubud, Bedugul, Kintamani, and Besakih are forecast to see rain throughout Wednesday, with thunderstorms expected in coastal areas at night.

Authorities are advising residents, tourists, and marine operators to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and monitor official weather updates as heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to persist.

Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD Bali) urged residents living near rivers, particularly along Tukad Badung in central Denpasar, to heed flood sirens installed at six locations across the city.

“The sirens are functioning well and are intended to reduce casualties,” BPBD Bali chief I Gede Agung Teja Bhusana said, referring to lessons learned from severe flooding in September 2025.

The flood warning system was activated twice early Tuesday, at around 3:00 a.m. and again at 8:30 a.m., indicating rising river levels, though water had not yet breached riverbanks.

Between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning alone, BPBD recorded at least 23 flood-related incidents in Denpasar, seven in Badung, five in Gianyar, four in Buleleng, and single incidents in Tabanan and Klungkung. Strong winds have affected all parts of Bali since Saturday night.

In Denpasar, localized tornado-like winds were reported in Padangsambian Kelod. Floodwaters in several key roads reached between 40 and 80 centimeters, including Jalan Griya Anyar near the Dewa Ruci intersection and stretches of the Ngurah Rai Bypass and Jalan Hang Tuah in Sanur.

Severe flooding was reported in the Pura Demak area of West Denpasar, where continuous rain since Saturday inundated dozens of homes and boarding houses, with water levels reaching up to one meter.

Residents said floodwaters began rising rapidly around 3:00 a.m. after pre-dawn prayers, exacerbated by clogged drainage channels and overflowing rivers west of the neighborhood. The area is a known flood hotspot during prolonged rainfall.

“I thought I could pass through, but my motorcycle stalled,” said Urip, a local resident who was forced to turn back after attempting to cross a flooded road.

Others spent the morning clearing trash from drains in an effort to speed up water runoff, but heavy rain prevented floodwaters from receding. Traffic disruptions were reported, with vehicles stalling and motorists forced to detour.

As of Tuesday morning, residents said no emergency response teams had arrived on site and called for long-term solutions, including drainage upgrades and river normalization to prevent recurring floods.
