Flash Floods in Bali Kill Student After House Collapse
Singaraja, Bali. Flash floods triggered by extreme weather and heavy rainfall swept through a residential area in Buleleng, Bali, on Friday, leaving one person dead after being trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed house, rescuers said.
The flooding hit Bakti Segara village on Friday afternoon after intense rain caused rivers in the area to overflow. Search and rescue officials said strong currents struck homes located near the riverbank, including a house in the Griya Mahadewa residential complex.
The victim, identified as 20-year-old college student Ricardo Razaq Alghivieri, was initially reported missing after floodwaters and debris partially destroyed his home.
Residents and rescue personnel searched along the river stretching northward toward Pantai Indah beach but failed to locate him during the initial operation.
Kadek Donny Indrawan, coordinator of the Buleleng Search and Rescue post, said the victim was later found buried beneath the collapsed structure after floodwaters began to recede.
“We received information that the victim had been found under the rubble of the house, and we immediately carried out a manual evacuation,” Donny said.
Rescue teams conducted the evacuation carefully due to the unstable condition of the damaged building. Authorities also rechecked the surrounding area and river flow together with local residents after water levels subsided.
The victim’s body was later transported to Buleleng Regional Hospital using an ambulance operated by the Indonesian Red Cross in Buleleng.
Authorities have not yet released details on the full extent of damage caused by the flooding.
