5.2 Magnitude Quake Shakes Blitar, Tremors Felt in Bali
Jakarta. A 5.2 magnitude quake shocked the East Javan regency of Biltar on Monday at 3.40 a.m., with tremors felt in Bali.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake’s epicenter was at sea, about 141 kilometers southwest of Blitar.
BMKG said the quake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.
However, the Balinese district Kuta felt tremors measured between II and III in the modified Mercalli intensity (MMI). A tremor of this size means that people can feel the tremors indoors, especially those on the upper floors of the building. It also very rarely causes damage.
People in East Java’s Nganjuk and Tulungagung, as well as Malang’s Karangkates, also felt the quake. The same goes for those in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The tremors in these areas fell within the MMI II weak range.
BMKG has advised people to remain calm. The agency reported that they had not detected any aftershocks as of 4.20 a.m.
