Jakarta. Jakarta has introduced contactless credit card payments on its Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, allowing passengers to pay fares by simply tapping eligible bank cards at station gates in a move aimed at making the Indonesian capital more accessible to international visitors and advancing its ambitions to become a global city.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung officially launched the EMV contactless payment system at Bundaran HI MRT Station on Wednesday. The new system allows passengers to tap eligible credit cards at station gates, eliminating the need to purchase dedicated transit cards or top up electronic money balances before traveling.

"This is the first system in Indonesia to accept contactless credit cards, whether Visa, Mastercard, or other card networks that may be added in the future," Pramono said at the launch ceremony.

The payment option is expected to make Jakarta's MRT more convenient for foreign visitors, many of whom are already accustomed to using contactless bank cards on public transportation systems in cities such as London, Singapore and Sydney.

Previously, passengers were required to use Indonesia's electronic money cards or purchase dedicated MRT tickets.

Pramono said the simplified payment process would enhance Jakarta's appeal as an international destination by allowing visitors to use credit cards they already carry, rather than purchasing a separate transit card upon arrival.

According to Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Jakarta welcomed about 2.5 million visitors in 2024. The governor said improving access to public transportation is a key part of strengthening the city's position as a global metropolis.
