TransJakarta Plans to Add Five New Routes Each Month
Jakarta. TransJakarta will add five new routes each month to the capital's bus rapid transit system to meet its target of carrying one million passengers per day.
About 800,000 passengers per day on average currently make use of the service, which is now trying to increase it to 900,000.
"The point is, we have to 'give gas' so we can reach 900,000 passengers per day in one to two months. If it is 900,000, the target will be just one step away," David Joseph, director of operations at TransJakarta, said on Tuesday.
In addition to opening new routes, the company will also increase its fleet of smaller buses to 1,441, from 904 currently, between July and October.
"With that, surely the number of passengers will increase. There will be a total of 93 additional routes, in accordance with an instruction from the transportation department," he said.
David said the integration of the TransJakarta busway with the city's new mass rapid transit (MRT) and light rail transit (LRT) systems is expected to greatly contribute to the company achieving its target of one million passengers per day.
"It is very helpful; before the MRT, there were only around 700,000 passengers [per day]. After integration with the MRT, it rose to 800,000," he said.
David added that about 50 TransJakarta bus routes have already been integrated with the LRT, while another two will be added in July.
