Jakarta Plans to Raise Transjabodetabek Fares to Rp 15,000
Jakarta. Jakarta plans to raise fares for its Transjabodetabek bus network to as much as Rp 15,000 ($0.84) from the current Rp 3,500 as the city government seeks to cover rising operational costs tied to the expansion of public transportation services across Greater Jakarta.
Governor Pramono Anung said on Thursday the fare hikes would not apply to all routes equally, despite public concerns that commuters across the capital region would face steep increases.
“I want to clarify the perception that all Transjabodetabek fares will increase to between Rp 10,000 and Rp 15,000,” Pramono said in South Jakarta. “Not all routes will see significant increases.”
The proposed adjustment comes as Jakarta expands the Transjabodetabek network to connect the capital with surrounding satellite cities such as Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, and routes serving Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
According to Pramono, airport routes are among those most likely to face higher fares because of additional operational expenses, including parking fees at airport terminals.
“There are three parking areas at Soekarno-Hatta and none are free. Parking costs create additional operational expenses,” he said.
The governor added that routes serving Bogor could also face fare adjustments because of longer travel distances and higher operating costs. However, he stressed that the administration would still consider commuters’ purchasing power amid current economic conditions.
“As governor, I must take into account the public’s economic condition and purchasing power,” he said.
The Jakarta administration is also reviewing plans to expand the number of groups eligible for free public transportation services as part of efforts to improve subsidy targeting.
Pramono said low-income residents should continue receiving free access to public transport, while financially better-off passengers may be asked to pay higher fares.
“This is to ensure subsidies are distributed more fairly. Those who are less fortunate should ride for free, while those who are financially capable can pay a little more,” he said.
The governor did not disclose when the new fares would take effect, saying the final pricing structure would be announced later. He also suggested businesses benefiting from the expanded transport network could help improve bus stop facilities and supporting infrastructure.
