Jakarta. The Jakarta government aims to operate as many as 10,000 electric buses by 2029 as part of efforts to shift commuters toward public transportation and reduce air pollution in the capital, Governor Pramono Anung said on Thursday.

Pramono said the city ultimately plans to replace the entire fleet of municipally owned operator TransJakarta with electric buses.

“My target for 2029 is 10,000 TransJakarta buses,” he said.

Jakarta Transportation Agency deputy head Ujang Harmawan said the city is aiming to deploy 10,047 electric buses by 2030, with around 5,000 units expected to be in operation by 2027.

“Providing the necessary infrastructure remains our main challenge in realizing a safe and environmentally friendly transportation system for Jakarta,” Ujang said.

Currently, TransJakarta operates about 500 electric buses, though not all are yet in service. The company runs a total fleet of roughly 4,800 buses and remains the backbone of Jakarta’s surface transport network.

According to data from the Jakarta Statistics Agency, TransJakarta carried 414 million passengers in 2025, up from 371 million the previous year, underscoring its critical role for daily commuters and city residents.

Rail-based systems also recorded growing ridership. Jakarta’s Mass Rapid Transit transported 45.5 million passengers in 2025, while the Light Rail Transit served 1.28 million riders over the same period.
