Jakarta. Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto recently said that women also deserve equal opportunities in education as men.

Prabowo was responding to his rival Anies Baswedan at the debate finale that took place in Jakarta on Sunday evening. Anies wanted to know what Prabowo planned to do to better improve the country's women empowerment should he get the chance to be Indonesia’s next president.

“Women play a major role in our nation. ... On education, I would build integrated, top-tier schools in every regency. Women must be given the same opportunities as men,” Prabowo told Anies.

Prabowo --who currently serves as the defense minister-- then recalled how he had opened majors in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields at the Defense University. He went on to say that the number of women pursuing those majors at the Defense University was quite high. The same goes for the defense polytechnic that he had launched in Atambua, East Nusantara.

“And it turns out that the female representation is also huge in the polytechnic in Atambua. It is even higher than men,” Prabowo said.

“It is true that we have to give opportunities for women, particularly through education ...,” he said.
