Jakarta. State-owned fertilizer maker Pupuk Indonesia recently harvested sweet corn at Mojokerto's Segoro Agung Islamic Boarding School.

The company said that the harvest reflected its effort to use the school's land for productive activities and to generate economic value.

According to Wawan Arjuna, senior manager for Region 3A at Pupuk Indonesia, Islamic boarding schools serve not only educational and religious functions. They also have the potential to develop productive economic activities by leveraging available resources.

"We wish to support agricultural activities so they can be managed productively, providing benefits to both the boarding school itself and the local communities," Wawan said.

Students can also learn about agriculture.

Pupuk Indonesia taught students about the factors for agricultural success, from land preparation, seed selection, and crop maintenance to water availability and pest and disease control.

The company also introduced its fertilizer products, namely urea, NPK Phonska, Petroganik organic fertilizer, and the non-subsidized Phonska Plus fertilizer.

The school's head Bimo Agus Sunarno described the collaboration as “incredibly helpful” in fostering the students' understanding of the proper cultivation techniques.

“We hope such partnerships will continue to flourish,” Bimo said.

He added that there are also opportunities to grow other commodities on the school grounds. This way, the boarding school can evolve into an agricultural learning hub that integrates education, skills training, and productive economic activities.
