Indo Raya Tenaga Embraces Chandra Asri’s CIRCLO© Plastic Asphalt Mixture
Jakarta. Chandra Asri Group said Friday that its recycled plastic product CIRCLO© had been supporting the road construction of power plant operator Indo Raya Tenaga's operational area.
The material is being used as part of a plastic asphalt mixture for the construction of several hundred meters of road within the premises of the Java 9 & 10 coal-fired power plant (PLTU Jawa 9 & 10).
The shredded recycled plastic used in the asphalt for road construction at Indo Raya Tenaga is equivalent to diverting up to 3,200 kilograms of plastic waste from landfills.
This initiative reflects Chandra Asri Group’s commitment to advancing circular economy practices in plastic waste management. The company is bringing back used plastic into the value chain as a material that enhances the strength and durability of asphalt.
Since 2025, Chandra Asri Group has been commercially producing CIRCLO© as recycled shredded plastic specifically designed for plastic asphalt mixtures. The material is produced in collaboration with recycling industry partners and marketed through PT Chandra Trading Nusantara, a subsidiary of Chandra Asri Group that manages the licensing and commercial activities of the CIRCLO© circular economy product.
“As an energy provider, we recognize the importance of ensuring that every aspect of our operations considers environmental impact, including in the construction and maintenance of infrastructure within our operational areas,” Indo Raya Tenaga project managing director Steve Adrianto said.
“The use of plastic asphalt represents a concrete step to integrate sustainability principles into our operations by creating added value from recycled materials while contributing to more responsible waste management.”
Plastic asphalt also offers technical advantages.
A 2017 study by the Public Works Ministry showed that plastic asphalt could improve road stability and durability while extending the service life of road structures compared to conventional asphalt. This solution not only helps reduce plastic waste but also contributes to the long-term efficiency of infrastructure maintenance.
“Chandra Asri Group consistently promotes circular economy practices through cross-sector collaboration, ranging from community-based waste management groups and recycling businesses to industrial partners as end users of circular materials,” Edi Rivai, the Director of Legal, External Relations & Circular Economy at Chandra Asri Group, said.
The utilization of CIRCLO© for asphalt mixtures at PT Indo Raya Tenaga demonstrates how circular solutions can be applied in practical ways to meet industry needs while delivering environmental and economic value.”
The production and processing of CIRCLO© also involve the informal sector and local communities working alongside recycling industry partners within the plastic waste collection and processing chain. This collaborative model creates new economic opportunities while strengthening the ecosystem of a circular economy.
CIRCLO© is expected to be adopted more widely by industries and institutions seeking to integrate sustainability principles into infrastructure development through plastic asphalt applications.
This initiative demonstrates how material innovation can bridge industrial needs with environmental solutions, ensuring that waste becomes a resource that creates new value.
