Jakarta. Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto recently revealed that Indonesia was still short of 140,000 doctors, so he planned on sending students to study abroad and build more medicine schools.

Prabowo was taking his final debate stage in Jakarta on Sunday evening before Indonesians cast their ballots on Feb. 14. The presidential hopeful kicked off the debate by promising to send 10,000 promising high school students to study medicine overseas. He also wants professors from abroad to teach Indonesian students in the country.

“I think it is crystal clear. We [Indonesia] are short of 140,000 doctors,” Prabowo said.

“There is a hospital in Atambua. They should have had 16 doctors, but that hospital only has one doctor. The doctor gets overwhelmed. The doctor has to serve three regencies at once,” Prabowo said.

Prabowo also wants to increase the number of medicine schools from just 92 to 300 schools.

“We wish to build modern hospitals in every regency and city. We also want to build modern healthcare centers in every village across the archipelago,” Prabowo said.
