Chandra Asri Explores Circular Campus Initiatives at UI
Jakarta. Petrochemical giant Chandra Asri Group explores circular campus initiatives at the University of Indonesia (UI).
The company has been running the “Jejak Asri on the Move” program to promote circularity. This initiative now reaches UI in partnership with the campus’ Center of Sustainability and Waste Management (CSWM UI) and the student body BEM UI. The initiative aims to engage students to explore how to address waste management on campus.
This initiative is part of the "Indonesia Asri" campaign’s broader effort to expand public participation -- particularly among the younger generation -- in developing ideas and driving concrete environmental action, specifically within campus settings.
UI generates 5 tons of waste a day, according to the university’s asset management office, DOPFMA UI.
At the focus group discussion, CSWM UI introduced a "Sustainable Social Innovation" framework, which encompasses seven key aspects: leadership, regulation, infrastructure, finance, organization, technology, and awareness. This framework emphasizes that sustainable waste management cannot rely solely on facilities and technology; it also requires policy support, funding, institutional backing, and the active involvement of the entire academic community.
“Collaboration with universities provides an opportunity to jointly explore ideas and develop circular economy practices that are relevant to campus needs. We hope this initiative will foster participation from the academic community and pave the way for best practices that can be applied more broadly to create a positive environmental impact,” CSWM UI Vice Principal Adam Febriyanto Nugraha said.
Chrysanthi Tarigan, Head of Corporate Communication at Chandra Asri Group, stated that through the ‘Indonesia Asri’ initiative, the company aims to transform environmental awareness into active participation and concrete action.
“Collaboration with universities provides an opportunity to jointly explore ideas and develop circular economy practices that are relevant to campus needs. We hope this initiative will foster participation from the academic community and pave the way for best practices that can be applied more broadly to create a positive environmental impact,” she said.
The initiative also provides space for students to also follow-up on the actions meant to support sustainable environmental management on campus.
Chandra Asri mulls expanding “Jejak Asri on the Move” initiative to other universities.
UI’s best practices can serve as a reference for developing circular economy initiatives that address the specific environmental management needs and challenges of individual campuses.
Through this collaboration, Indonesia Asri reaffirms its commitment to strengthening education, participation, and concrete action in promoting the implementation of a circular economy — one that delivers broader benefits to both society and the environment.
