BPJS Kesehatan Guarantees Access to Medicines Through JKN's Fornas
For millions of Indonesians, peace of mind in healthcare means more than just access to doctors and hospitals; it means knowing that essential medicines are available and covered when needed. Through the National Health Insurance Program (JKN), state-owned insurer BPJS Kesehatan guarantees that every participant receives medication aligned with their medical needs, in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s National Formulary (Fornas).
Rizzky Anugerah, Head of Public Relations at BPJS Kesehatan, explained that all medicines under JKN are carefully selected through the Fornas system, a policy determined by the Minister of Health. “Fornas is developed by pharmacology experts appointed by the Minister, based on the latest scientific evidence. The medicines chosen must be effective, safe, and affordable,” Rizzky said in Jakarta on Friday.
The Fornas committee itself includes practitioners, academics, the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), and other stakeholders, ensuring that the selection process reflects both quality and patient needs.
“Every medicine covered under JKN has gone through strict selection according to the medical needs of the Indonesian population. Fornas ensures quality and effectiveness of treatment, promotes rational drug use, optimizes patient services, and simplifies medicine planning and supply,” Rizzky added.
Importantly, hospitals are required to provide alternative or equivalent medicines if stock shortages occur, ensuring no patient is left without treatment. “Participants do not need to pay additional costs; all prescribed medicines under JKN remain fully covered,” Rizzky said.
He also added that hospitals are prohibited from charging extra fees, in line with the JKN Service Promise of non-discriminatory and cost-free benefits for all participants.
“This is the true embodiment of the constitution’s mandate, the state is present to provide social protection for its people. In this moment of independence, we want to reaffirm that every JKN participant receives their full rights without financial barriers to medicines,” he said.
Since its launch in 2014, the JKN program has provided invaluable support to participants across the country. For many, it has transformed access to healthcare from a heavy financial burden into an assured right.
One of them is Siswanto, a resident of Sidomulya Village in Kediri. His only son, Diego, has been battling thalassemia and requires regular treatment at RSUD Simpang Lima Gumul. The journey has been emotionally and financially exhausting, but JKN coverage has given him hope.
“I am grateful to God that my son and I are registered as JKN participants. It helps us so much. The costs of transfusions, checkups, and medicines are fully covered. We feel valued and cared for, and that means the world to us. JKN truly eases our burden and gives us new hope,” Siswanto shared.
With its strong commitment to affordable, reliable, and equitable healthcare, BPJS Kesehatan continues to stand by Indonesians, ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to access to essential medicines.
