Belém, Brazil. Indonesian conglomerate Astra presented the latest progress of its corporate sustainability initiatives while supporting the Environment Ministry in showcasing the Indonesia Pavilion at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), held on 10–21 November 2025 in Belém, Brazil.

This year’s Indonesia Pavilion carries the theme “Accelerating Substantial Actions of Net Zero Achievement through Indonesia High Integrity Carbon,” featuring more than 50 sessions, including ministerial dialogues, CEO talks, and a Seller-Meet-Buyer forum for carbon credit markets.

Astra participated as a speaker in the Pavilion’s CEO Talks session on Wednesday, represented by Dr. Bandung Sahari, Director of Sustainability at Astra Agro Lestari.

During the session, Astra Agro outlined several flagship sustainability initiatives, including digital plantation transformation using machine learning and sensor-based systems to boost operational efficiency; peatland rewetting programs to reduce carbon emissions and protect ecosystems; and converting palm oil mill effluent (POME) into biogas as a renewable energy source.

Astra President Director Djony Bunarto Tjondro reiterated the group’s long-term commitment to climate action and sustainable growth.

“Astra continues to innovate and transition toward a more sustainable company that creates positive impact for the planet, the climate, and Indonesian society,” Djony said. “This commitment is embodied in our Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations, which emphasize technology-driven innovation, nature-based solutions, and renewable-energy optimization to ensure that every initiative benefits both today’s and future generations.”

Progress Toward Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations
By 2024, Astra reported significant progress toward its 2030 goals, including:

  • 17.41 percent reduction in Group scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions from the 2019 baseline;
  • 44 percent renewable-energy mix across operations;
  • 98.92 percent recycling and recovery rate for solid waste;
  • 2.63 million beneficiaries reached through community-development programs.

In 2024, the group implemented multiple decarbonization initiatives that delivered energy savings of 3,136.84 terajoules and generated 41,126 terajoules of renewable energy from solar PV, biomass, and renewable energy certificates (RECs). Additional emissions reductions were achieved through methane-capture facilities in the agribusiness sector and carbon-credit purchases via the Indonesia Carbon Exchange across other business units.

Circular-economy strategies -- such as refurbishing, remanufacturing, and recycling -- also strengthened Astra’s solid-waste recovery programs.

Community Empowerment Through Forest Restoration
Astra’s sustainability agenda also includes the Astra Sustainable Forest program, which supports both community livelihoods and climate-mitigation efforts. In collaboration with local farmers, the group restores forest areas by planting species such as Suren and Rasamala, along with productive crops including coffee and avocado.

As of 2024, the program has managed 2,491 hectares of land and planted 1.28 million trees, contributing to community empowerment and emissions reduction.

Astra, one of Indonesia’s largest publicly listed companies, operates 302 subsidiaries, joint ventures, and associates, supported by more than 190,000 employees. The group has long maintained strong public-service contributions through its four social pillars -- health, education, environment, and entrepreneurship -- supported by nine foundations.

Astra’s long-standing commitment to delivering positive impact aligns with its vision of Sejahtera Bersama Bangsa (“Prosper with the Nation”) and supports Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
