Jakarta. Indonesia and Vietnam meet in a pivotal Group A clash at Pakansari Stadium in Bogor on Monday evening, with both teams needing a strong result to strengthen their chances of reaching the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN Championship (AFF Cup).

Indonesia enter the match in second place with six points from two wins — a 3-0 victory over Timor-Leste and a 5-1 win against Cambodia — while defending champions Vietnam sit third with four points after a 7-0 rout of Timor-Leste and a goalless draw with Singapore.

Vietnam coach Kim Sang-sik said his team needs three points to keep its semifinal hopes alive, but playing away from home would present additional mental and physical challenges.

“This match is very important for our chances of advancing to the next round. We know we have to win,” Kim told reporters on Sunday.

Kim has also singled out Indonesia forward Mitchell Baker as one of the most dangerous players in the Garuda squad ahead of the Group A clash.

The 1.97-meter (6-foot-5) Australian-born striker has scored four goals at the 2026 AFF Championship, including a hat trick against Cambodia.

Vietnam will also have to contend with an Indonesia midfield led by Thom Haye, who has emerged as one of the tournament's key players. Indonesia coach John Herdman praised the Persib Bandung midfielder's versatility, saying he can operate as a central midfielder, second striker or more advanced attacking player.

Haye has already made a major impact in Indonesia's opening two matches, providing three assists against Cambodia before scoring from a free kick against Timor-Leste.

That importance could make Haye a particular target for Vietnam as the teams renew a rivalry that has frequently produced physical and tightly contested matches. In Indonesia's win over Timor-Leste, Haye was involved in the sequence of challenges that resulted in Timor-Leste defender Jackson Fowler being sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

The former Canada coach also played down concerns over Indonesia’s unconvincing performance in their narrow win over Timor-Leste, saying he was not focused on producing a perfect 90-minute performance. He noted that football naturally involves shifts in momentum, emotions, disciplinary incidents and refereeing decisions that can influence a match.

Indonesia captain Rizky Ridho has warned his teammates not to be drawn into confrontations or provocation.

Matches between Indonesia and Vietnam are traditionally high-intensity affairs, Ridho said, urging the squad to remain disciplined and follow Herdman's tactical instructions. He also believes the presence of video assistant referee technology should encourage players on both sides to be more cautious.

The match represents a different challenge for Herdman's Indonesia, who have made a perfect start to the tournament with wins over Cambodia and Timor-Leste. Vietnam, meanwhile, have already shown both sides of their game: overwhelming attacking power in their 7-0 opening win, followed by an inability to break down Singapore.

For Vietnam, anything less than victory could leave their semifinal hopes vulnerable to the results of other Group A matches. Indonesia, meanwhile, can strengthen its position near the top of the group with another positive result.

The 2026 ASEAN Championship group stage runs through Aug. 8, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semifinals.
