Jakarta. Indonesia will conduct a comprehensive review of its national soccer team after the side failed to reach the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN Championship, Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir said.

The decision came after Indonesia drew 1-1 with Singapore in their final Group A match at Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore on Friday, ending their campaign in third place and outside the semifinal spots.

“We will conduct an evaluation of the results at the 2026 ASEAN Championship so that the national team is better prepared for several important tournaments ahead,” Erick said in a social media post on Friday.

Indonesia took the lead shortly after halftime when Ragnar Oratmangoen scored in the 47th minute. Singapore equalized through Ilhan Fandi in the 66th minute, capitalizing on a lapse in coordination in Indonesia’s defense.

Indonesia coach John Herdman said his team had controlled much of the match but failed to convert its chances into the additional goals needed to secure a victory.

“We dominated the game. I think we were on top,” Herdman said, according to Indonesian media reports on Saturday.

The English coach also praised Singapore for its defensive organization and resilience.

“Fair play to Singapore, they have good resilience,” Herdman said. “They were very well organized.”

The draw left Indonesia unable to overtake either Singapore or Vietnam in the final Group A standings. Vietnam topped the group with 10 points, while Singapore advanced to the semifinals as runners-up with eight points.

Before the match, Erick had urged supporters to continue backing Herdman and the national team regardless of the result. He described the 2026 ASEAN Championship as part of Indonesia’s broader process of rebuilding the team, developing its character and regenerating the squad. He added that a number of young players were being prepared as the foundation for Indonesia’s longer-term ambition of qualifying for the 2030 World Cup.

Indonesia’s elimination shifts the team’s focus to other international fixtures scheduled for this year, including the FIFA ASEAN Cup and FIFA Matchday games.

The Garuda squad will then prepare for the 2027 Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia, which begin in January 2027.

The early exit marks Indonesia’s second consecutive failure to reach the ASEAN Championship semifinals. At the 2024 edition, Indonesia, then coached by Shin Tae-yong and featuring a largely young squad, also finished third in its group with four points.

Indonesia last reached the semifinals in 2020, when the team advanced to the final before losing to Thailand 6-2 on aggregate to finish runners-up.
