Indonesia Makes Two Late Squad Changes ahead of FIFA ASEAN Cup
Jakarta. Indonesia coach John Herdman made two late changes to his 23-man squad on Tuesday, just three days before the Garuda open their campaign at the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
Defenders Dony Tri Pamungkas and Yakob Sayuri have been withdrawn because of fitness and health issues, with Shayne Pattynama and Rizky Eka Pratama called up as replacements.
Dony returned to Persija Jakarta after undergoing a fitness assessment with the national team, Herdman said after leading Tuesday's training session at Madya Stadium in Jakarta.
“We had to remove a couple of players from the roster today. Dony Tri Pamungkas has returned to Persija after undergoing a fitness assessment,” Herdman said.
“We felt the best thing for him was to return, undergo the necessary procedures and recover as a player.”
Yakob, meanwhile, required hospital treatment because of a dental problem.
“That meant we brought Rizky Eka Pratama into the team to replace him, while Shayne Pattynama will replace Dony Tri Pamungkas,” Herdman said.
The changes come after Indonesia had already lost captain Jay Idzes to injury before Herdman announced his original 23-man squad last week.
In Idzes' absence, Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Kevin Diks has been entrusted with the captaincy.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup carries particular significance for Diks after club commitments prevented him from joining Indonesia for the previous regional tournament.
Indonesia will compete in Group A alongside Singapore, Malaysia and Bangladesh, with all of the Garuda's group matches to be played at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta. The tournament is the inaugural edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup.
Group B comprises Thailand, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Philippines, with matches to be staged at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung.
James, Verdonk Yet to Arrive
Twenty-one of Indonesia's 23 players had joined Tuesday afternoon's training session at Madya Stadium.
Dean James and Calvin Verdonk were the only players yet to report as they completed commitments with their European clubs.
Herdman said both were scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Verdonk featured for Lille in its 2-1 defeat to Nice, while James played for Go Ahead Eagles in a 1-1 draw with NEC Nijmegen over the weekend.
Indonesia begins its Group A campaign against Singapore on Friday, Sept. 25, before facing Malaysia on Sept. 28 and Bangladesh on Oct. 1.
