Malaysia Asks FIFA to Review Stoppage-Time Change That Helped Indonesia Reach Final
Jakarta. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will ask FIFA to explain why the displayed stoppage time changed from two minutes to seven during Indonesia’s 9-2 victory over Bangladesh in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage.
In a statement released Friday, FAM said it would seek clarification on the basis, procedures and circumstances behind the change during Thursday’s match at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.
FAM said match timekeeping was an important part of ensuring games were conducted in accordance with regulations and the principles of transparency and fairness.
The issue has drawn attention because the result directly affected the race between Indonesia and Malaysia for a place in the tournament final.
Indonesia eventually won 9-2 to finish atop Group A, edging Malaysia on goals scored after both teams finished with seven points and an identical goal difference of plus nine.
With the match approaching the end of regulation time, Indonesia led Bangladesh 7-1. The fourth official initially displayed two minutes of stoppage time before the figure was changed to seven minutes.
Indonesia scored twice more during the additional period, completing a nine-goal performance that secured its place in the final.
FAM said it wanted FIFA to review the incident and explain the decision-making process to establish whether the change complied with the applicable rules and procedures.
The Malaysian federation said that its request was not intended to challenge the final result or either team's achievement. Instead, it said the aim was to obtain clarity and prevent misunderstandings or speculation surrounding the officiating.
Indonesia coach John Herdman previously said the fourth official had made an error when displaying the initial stoppage time. Herdman added that the match had experienced several interruptions, including video assistant referee (VAR) reviews.
The result left Indonesia and Malaysia level on seven points from three group matches, with both sides recording a goal difference of plus nine. Indonesia advanced as group winners because it scored more goals across the group stage.
Indonesia will face Thailand in the final after the Thai team defeated Vietnam. The championship match is scheduled for Oct. 5 at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.
