Indonesia Eyes Title as Host of Inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup
Jakarta. Indonesia is set to host the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Division 1 tournament in Jakarta and Bandung from Sept. 25, bringing together eight teams from Southeast and South Asia.
The Division 2 competition will begin a day earlier, on Sept. 24, in Hong Kong SAR, featuring the host team and five Southeast Asian sides.
“Jakarta is a city that we are developing as a sports destination, and we are very welcoming of sporting tournaments,” Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said Sunday.
“We hope the tournament runs smoothly and, more importantly, that Indonesia can become champion,” he added.
Pramono said Jakarta had met the hosting requirements set out by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), with security and transportation services among the city's priorities during the tournament.
Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta will host Group A, comprising Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Singapore.
Group B matches will be played at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, West Java, featuring Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines.
PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir described hosting the inaugural tournament as a source of pride for Indonesia.
“It is a great honor for Indonesia to make history as the host of the first FIFA ASEAN Cup,” Erick wrote on Instagram.
“We were previously entrusted with hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2023. It is an honor, a responsibility, and an opportunity to show the world that Indonesia can once again successfully host a world-class FIFA competition,” he added.
