Jakarta. Malaysia defeated Vietnam 1-0 to claim third place in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup on Monday, completing a remarkable campaign in which they neither lost a match nor conceded a single goal.

Substitute Fergus Tierney scored the winner in the 62nd minute at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, firing a powerful shot from outside the penalty area past goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang.

The goal came barely two minutes after Tierney replaced veteran striker Bergson da Silva, who had been struggling with an injury.

Malaysia's victory also ended a 12-year wait for a win over Vietnam. Their previous victory against the regional rival came in the second leg of the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals.

Vietnam thought they had been handed an opportunity to equalize in the 73rd minute when referee Ko Hyung-jin awarded a penalty after Le Van Do went down following a challenge from Harith Haiqal.

The decision was reviewed by VAR, prompting Ko to examine the incident on the pitchside monitor. Replays showed Harith making contact with the ball, and the referee overturned the penalty decision.

Vietnam continued to push for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Malaysia's disciplined defense held firm to preserve both the victory and their perfect defensive record.

The result meant Malaysia finished the tournament with three wins and one draw, scoring 10 goals without conceding any.

Their only draw came against host Indonesia in Group A.

That goalless match ultimately proved decisive in determining which team reached the final. Malaysia and Indonesia both finished the group stage with seven points and a plus-nine goal difference, but Indonesia advanced as group winner after scoring 11 goals to Malaysia's nine.

Malaysia therefore entered the third-place playoff despite being unbeaten and having not conceded a goal.

Tierney's strike against Vietnam ensured those unusual records remained intact -- and earned Malaysia a bronze medal to show for them.

Malaysia's full tournament record included 3-0 vs Bangladesh, 0-0 vs Indonesia, 6-0 vs Singapore, and 1-0 vs Vietnam
