Indonesia-Malaysia Clash Draws 56,000 Fans to Gelora Bung Karno
Jakarta. More than 56,000 tickets had been sold by Monday afternoon for Indonesia's highly anticipated FIFA ASEAN Cup clash against Malaysia, as the long-running regional rivalry returns to Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
The Group A match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Jakarta time, with both teams entering the game on three points after winning their opening matches. Malaysia leads the group on goal difference after beating Bangladesh 3-0, while Indonesia is second following a 2-0 victory over Singapore.
The match has drawn particular attention because Indonesia and Malaysia have not met at the Jakarta stadium since 2019. The rivalry has also added significance to a tournament in which only the group winner advances to the final.
Malaysia striker Bergson da Silva likened the rivalry between Indonesia and Malaysia to the Brazil-Argentina football rivalry, underscoring the significance of their upcoming Group A clash.
The Brazilian-born forward, who recently became eligible to represent Malaysia after completing five years of residency, scored on his international debut in the 3-0 victory over Bangladesh.
Indonesia coach John Herdman said the intensity of the rivalry could push his players to raise their game.
"Usually big games like that bring out the best performances from top players," Herdman said during a training session in Jakarta on Sunday.
Security has also been tightened around the match. The Jakarta Metro Police has deployed 2,373 personnel under Operation Garuda Bakti 2026 to secure the Indonesia-Malaysia game and the Singapore-Bangladesh match being held at the same venue earlier Monday.
Police have assigned personnel to team hotels, travel routes, stadium entrances, the stadium interior, and VIP areas. They will also handle traffic management, security checks, sterilization, and patrols around the Gelora Bung Karno complex.
Indonesia and Malaysia are both seeking a second consecutive victory in the tournament. With the two sides level on three points, Monday's result could have a major bearing on the race for the top spot in Group A.
