Jakarta. A collision between a commuter train and a long-distance passenger train in Bekasi, part of Greater Jakarta, on Monday night has left at least three people dead and dozens injured, officials said, as rescue operations continued amid reports of passengers trapped inside mangled carriages.

The accident involved a commuter line train (KRL) and the Argo Bromo Anggrek service traveling from Jakarta to Surabaya, East Java. It occurred at around 8:52 p.m. local time near East Bekasi Station, a busy rail corridor in the Jakarta metropolitan area.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, who visited the scene, said 29 passengers had been evacuated so far, with three confirmed dead. Authorities warned the toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.

“Twenty-nine people have been evacuated, three have died. The evacuation process is ongoing,” Dasco said.

Initial footage circulating on social media showed severe damage to one of the commuter train’s carriages, particularly a women-only section, where several passengers appeared trapped and were seen signaling for help.

State rail operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) said evacuation efforts were ongoing, with emergency teams working alongside police and other authorities to rescue passengers and secure the site.

“As of now, KAI and the police are continuing evacuation efforts and assisting victims at the scene,” said Franoto Wibowo, public relations manager of KAI’s Jakarta office.

Rescue operations have been complicated by heavily damaged train cars and limited access to the crash site, forcing responders to cut through twisted metal to reach trapped passengers. Authorities also temporarily shut off overhead electric power along the Cibitung–East Bekasi line to ensure safety during the evacuation.

Injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals, including Bekasi Regional Hospital, where emergency units were reportedly overwhelmed. Many of the injured were women returning home from work, with some suffering fractures, according to initial reports.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

KAI has apologized for the incident, saying its immediate priority is ensuring the safety and treatment of passengers and crew while coordinating with authorities to manage the aftermath.

Rail services along the Bekasi–Cikarang corridor remain disrupted as officials continue efforts to evacuate victims, clear the wreckage, and restore operations.
