Two Strong Earthquakes Strike Waters off Maluku and South Papua
Jakarta. Two strong earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.4 and 6.0 struck eastern Indonesia on Thursday morning, shaking parts of Maluku and Papua, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The first earthquake, measuring 6.4, occurred at 5:06 a.m. Jakarta time, with its epicenter in the sea about 60 kilometers northwest of Larat Island in the Tanimbar Islands regency, Maluku, at a depth of 160 kilometers.
The tremors were felt in Sorong, Southwest Papua, and Kaimana, West Papua, at intensities of II to III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. Shaking was also reported in Banda Naira and the Tanimbar Islands.
At intensity II, tremors are felt by some people, while lightly suspended objects may sway. Intensity III describes shaking noticeable indoors, similar to the vibration caused by a heavy vehicle passing nearby.
A second earthquake, measuring 6.0, struck Boven Digoel regency in South Papua at 10:26 a.m. Jakarta time. BMKG located its epicenter at sea-free coordinates approximately 175 kilometers northeast of Boven Digoel, at a depth of 120 kilometers.
The agency said the second earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
BMKG urged residents to remain alert to the possibility of aftershocks. No casualties or damage had been reported from either earthquake at the time of writing.
