Death Toll From Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake in Indonesia’s Flores Rises to Five
Kupang, NTT. The death toll from a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province has risen to five, East Nusa Tenggara Governor Melki Laka Lena said Saturday.
The latest figure was based on reports received by the provincial government, Melki said at a news conference in Kupang attended by officials from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the regional disaster agency; search and rescue teams; the military; and police.
"Two of the deaths were reported in Sikka district, while three others were recorded in Manggarai district," Melki told Antara news agency.
The victims were believed to have been killed by collapsing buildings during the earthquake, although authorities were still verifying the circumstances of each death.
Melki said he would travel to Flores on Saturday with a team to assess the situation directly. Officials are expected to provide further updates on casualties and damage after conducting field assessments.
The earthquake has also damaged infrastructure across Flores, with several roads reportedly damaged or cut off. Landslides were reported in several locations, potentially hampering access to affected areas.
Provincial authorities have coordinated with district governments, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), military and police to respond to the disaster and assess damage.
Officials are focusing on locating and assisting victims, verifying casualty figures, assessing damaged infrastructure and restoring access to areas affected by landslides and road disruptions.
The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nagekeo district on Flores early Saturday, triggering a tsunami warning that was later lifted. Strong shaking was reported across several parts of Flores and neighboring areas, prompting residents in coastal communities to evacuate as a precaution.
