Jakarta. House Speaker Puan Maharani said on Tuesday that her mother, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri, is eager to meet with President-elect Prabowo Subianto sooner rather than later.

PDI-P is the only incumbent party that has yet to openly declare its support for Prabowo's future government. He is set to be inaugurated as Indonesia’s eighth president later this month.

Prabowo has repeatedly expressed his desire to meet with Megawati, the only major party leader he hasn’t spoken to in person since the election.

“Both are keen to meet,” Puan told reporters in Jakarta. When asked about the timing of the meeting, she responded, “As soon as possible.”

The prospect of having PDI-P's support would give Prabowo an absolute majority in the House of Representatives.

Even without PDI-P, the pro-government coalition will control over 80 percent of the House seats, suggesting that many government policies may go unchallenged in the legislature.

All eyes are now on PDI-P, as the party’s decision will determine whether it joins the government or plays an opposition role, as it did during Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's presidency from 2004 to 2014.
