Jakarta. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called for calm on Friday after the death of a 21-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, struck by a police armored vehicle during a protest in Jakarta, triggered violent demonstrations in the capital.

In a televised statement, Prabowo extended condolences to the family of Affan Kurniawan, whose death on Thursday night has ignited widespread anger among students, ride-hailing drivers, and community groups. “In my personal capacity and on behalf of the government of the Republic of Indonesia, I extend my deepest condolences,” he said.

The president said the government would ensure support for the victim’s family. “The government will guarantee the well-being of his family and give special attention to his parents and siblings,” he added.

Prabowo acknowledged that the demonstrations, which began peacefully, have at times turned violent. “There were demonstrations that turned anarchic, and there was also an incident in which security personnel struck an online motorcycle taxi driver, the late Affan Kurniawan, who passed away last night,” he said.

He urged the public to remain vigilant against groups seeking to exploit the tragedy. “There are elements who always want chaos. I tell the people that this does not benefit anyone, not the public, not our nation,” Prabowo said.

The president emphasized that while citizens are free to voice their grievances, they should do so peacefully. “Aspirations may be expressed as long as it is done in an orderly manner,” he said, calling on Indonesians to avoid violence as the country works to strengthen its economy and reduce poverty.

The Jakarta police have faced mounting criticism since the incident. Authorities confirmed that seven members of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) have been detained and questioned, though the driver of the armored vehicle involved has not yet been identified.

The protests are the latest challenge for Prabowo’s young administration, which has sought to project stability as Indonesia pursues economic reforms and infrastructure development.
