Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has opted not to follow his predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s tradition of wearing traditional attire for the annual state address.

Prabowo is scheduled to deliver his first state address at the parliamentary complex in about an hour. On Friday morning, the retired army general arrived in a gray suit with a blue tie -- his go-to formal look -- paired with a traditional black cap, or peci. Cabinet members and other guests also adhered to the formal suit-and-peci dress code.

When Jokowi delivered his final state address last year, he wore the traditional attire of the Betawi people. Throughout his presidency, Jokowi had made a point of showcasing Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity by wearing different regional outfits during the event -- a tradition he began in 2017 when he appeared in attire from the Bugis ethnic group of South Sulawesi.

Jokowi was among the high-profile guests at this year’s address. Like Prabowo, he attended in a suit and peci, marking a departure from the traditional attire he had worn for years.
