Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has expressed deep condolences following the death of 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, a motorcycle taxi driver who was fatally struck by a police armored vehicle during a protest in Jakarta on August 28.

“In my personal capacity and on behalf of the government of the Republic of Indonesia, I extend my deepest condolences,” Prabowo said in a video message released Friday.

The president said he has been closely monitoring developments surrounding the protests, which have at times descended into violence. “There were demonstrations that turned anarchic, and there was also an incident in which security personnel struck an online motorcycle taxi driver, the late Affan Kurniawan, who passed away last night,” he said.

Prabowo added that the government would ensure support for the victim’s family. “I am deeply saddened by this tragedy. The government will guarantee the well-being of his family and give special attention to his parents and siblings,” he said.

Authorities confirmed that seven members of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) have been detained and questioned in connection with the incident, though the driver of the armored vehicle has yet to be identified.
