Batang. An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 struck Batang, Central Java, on Saturday at 7:38 a.m. Jakarta time, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The epicenter of the quake was located at 6.97 degrees south latitude and 109.72 degrees east longitude, precisely inland, 6 kilometers southwest of Batang, at a depth of 5 kilometers.

“Given the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, this earthquake is a shallow type caused by active fault activity,” said Setyoajie Prayoedhie, Head of the Sleman Geophysics Station, on BMKG's Instagram account on Saturday.

No damage has been reported as a result of the earthquake so far.

“We urge the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unreliable information. Avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the quake,” Setyoajie advised.

Setyoajie noted that BMKG’s monitoring shows this earthquake is part of a series of quakes that began on Sunday (July 7), with four recorded aftershocks. According to data from the Central Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD Jateng), the July 7 quake damaged 56 buildings and injured dozens of people. The quake did not affect the Batang Integrated Industrial Zone, the Batang Steam Power Plant (PLTU), or other strategic areas.

Hery Susanto Wibowo, Head of the Banjarnegara Geophysics Station, said there are 13 active faults in Central Java with the potential to cause earthquakes. One of these is located at the border between Batang Regency and Pekalongan City.
