Jakarta. Construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Jakarta Phase 2A extension continues to advance, with Contract Package 202 (CP202) reaching 60.2 percent completion as of Nov. 25, the project operator said on Thursday. The package covers the development of Harmoni, Sawah Besar, and Mangga Besar stations, along with 1.8 kilometers of underground tunnels.

Sony Desta Primamdani, Project Management of Construction at MRT Jakarta, said tunneling work using two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) remains on schedule.

“Progress for CP202 as of November 25 is 60.2 percent,” Sony told reporters during a site visit to Sawah Besar Station in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

TBM 1, operating at a depth of around 28 meters, is expected to break through to Mangga Besar Station in April 2026, while TBM 2, positioned above it in a stacked tunnel configuration, is projected to reach the same point in July 2026.

“With those targets, we expect the full tunnel network for Phase 2A from Bundaran HI to Kota Station to be fully connected by August 2026,” Sony said.

The MRT Phase 2A development covers a main line of roughly 5.8 kilometers with six underground stations (Thamrin, Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, and Glodok) and one station in Kota.

CP202 is considered the most technically unique segment of Phase 2A due to its station and tunnel design. Unlike earlier underground stations, which typically feature two levels and parallel left–right tunnels, CP202 uses a four-level station layout with vertically stacked tunnels.

The design was chosen due to limited space beneath Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Hayam Wuruk, two of Jakarta’s busiest and most crowded historic corridors.

“This stacked tunnel configuration is necessary because of the limited land and additional challenges surrounding the station,” Sony said.

The four-level layout will include a concourse, a southbound platform toward Lebak Bulus, a second concourse, and a northbound platform toward Kota Station. The complexity of the design requires enhanced soil stabilization, the protection of aging heritage buildings in the vicinity, and upgraded safeguards against flooding and earthquakes.

Sony added that construction is being carried out under the latest Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for seismic loads, which has increased earthquake resistance requirements.

“The current SNI introduces higher coefficients for seismic loads, so all station and soil designs account for the maximum potential earthquake risks in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta,” he said.
