MRT Jakarta Invests Rp200 Billion to Expand Bundaran HI Underground Concourse
Jakarta. Integrasi Transit Jakarta (ITJ), a subsidiary of MRT Jakarta, is investing Rp200 billion ($13.5 million) to expand the underground concourse at Jakarta’s Bundaran HI MRT Station, with the project designed to improve connectivity to surrounding commercial areas.
The Extended Concourse project will add 4,439 square meters of space and provide direct underground connections to major destinations including Plaza Indonesia, Grand Hyatt, Wisma Nusantara, and Pullman Hotel.
Physical construction had reached 21% by mid-August 2026. ITJ expects progress to reach 25% by the end of August.
ITJ President Director Yulham Ferdiansyah Roestam said the project was initiated to strengthen intermodal connectivity and support the development of a transit-oriented development (TOD) ecosystem in central Jakarta.
“Through this project, we are expanding the service area of Bundaran HI Station by 4,439 square meters,” Ferdiansyah said during a site visit in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.
Two New Entrances
Located beneath the Bundaran HI Transjakarta bus stop, the extended concourse will feature two new entrances, known as Muara 1 and Muara 2.
Muara 1 on the western side will provide access to Plaza Indonesia and Grand Hyatt, while Muara 2 on the eastern side will connect passengers to Wisma Nusantara and Hotel Pullman.
The western entrance will include an escalator, stairs, and an elevator, while the eastern entrance will have an escalator and stairs.
The project will also include knockdown panels that can eventually provide direct connections to the basement level of Plaza Indonesia and a future basement development at Wisma Nusantara.
“This will allow seamless interconnections with the surrounding commercial buildings,” Ferdiansyah said.
The expansion is expected to reduce the need for passengers to leave the station and cross busy roads or walk outdoors to reach nearby shopping and commercial destinations.
Construction Progresses on Three Fronts
Construction is currently being carried out simultaneously at three locations, including wall construction and reinforcement, waterproofing, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) work, as well as installation of steel sheet piles (SSP).
Waterproofing work has been completed, while construction teams are continuing to strengthen and thicken the underground walls.
The project is being carried out in two main stages. Stage 1, running from April to September 2026, covers minor traffic diversions, SSP installation, bored-pile foundations, and the installation of struts and wallers.
To minimize disruption on Jalan MH Thamrin, one lane has been narrowed to 2.7 meters, while the Transjakarta busway is being used as a mixed-use lane along the Bundaran HI bus stop.
Stage 2, scheduled from October 2026 to May 2027, will focus on deep excavation and construction of the main concrete structures for Muara 1 and Muara 2.
Preparing for Future Passenger Growth
The expanded concourse is intended to accommodate rising passenger volumes as MRT Jakarta’s North-South Line Phase 2A between Bundaran HI and Kota begins full operations in 2029, followed by the East-West Line in 2032.
ITJ estimates the expanded facility will accommodate an additional circulation of about 6,000 passengers and visitors per day.
The 4,439-square-meter concourse will also feature 24 multifunctional areas for food and beverage outlets, retail, lifestyle businesses and public services, creating additional commercial activity around the station.
The project is targeted for completion in May 2027 and is scheduled to be inaugurated in June 2027 by the governor of Jakarta as part of celebrations marking the capital’s 500th anniversary.
The development is built around three concepts — Connect, Experience and Activate — aimed at transforming the expanded concourse from a transit space into an integrated commercial and public area in the heart of Jakarta.
