Jakarta Plans to Build International Hospital to Curb Medical Travel Abroad
Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin discussed plans to develop a 3.6-hectare international hospital on Jalan Kyai Tapa, Tomang, in West Jakarta, aiming to reduce the number of residents traveling abroad for medical care.
The meeting took place Tuesday at the Health Ministry office in Jakarta. Minister Budi expressed full support for the project.
“Today, I met with the Governor to discuss the use of the land at Sumber Waras. The idea is to build an international hospital to reduce the number of patients traveling abroad. This aligns with the President’s direction, so let’s build a quality hospital here,” Budi said after the meeting.
Governor Pramono proposed two options for the hospital’s development. The first is to include the project in the National Strategic Projects (PSN). The second is for the Jakarta provincial government to lead the construction.
“If approved by the central government, we hope this project can enter the PSN. Otherwise, the Jakarta government can build it with equipment support from the Health Ministry,” Pramono said, adding that he also seeks assistance in recruiting internationally qualified doctors for the hospital.
The governor said Jakarta currently has two hospital projects underway: one in Cakung on 1.7 hectares and another at the Sumber Waras site on 3.6 hectares, for which funding has already been partially secured.
Minister Budi added that the project’s success depends on quality infrastructure, international-standard medical staff, and service levels capable of attracting wealthy Jakarta residents who currently seek treatment abroad. “We discussed financing options and the quality of doctors so that Jakarta residents don’t have to leave the country for healthcare,” he said.
