Jakarta. The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to partner with the Education Fund Management Agency (LPDP) to expand access to overseas scholarships, targeting students from low-income families as part of efforts to strengthen human capital.

Governor Pramono Anung said the proposed Jakarta-LPDP program will fund postgraduate education, including master’s and doctoral degrees at universities abroad.

“Jakarta will provide scholarships in collaboration with LPDP, aiming to give children from modest families the opportunity to pursue higher education overseas,” Pramono said during a visit to East Jakarta on Tuesday.

LPDP, a government-funded scholarship agency under the Finance Ministry, finances postgraduate studies both domestically and internationally.

The collaboration is part of Jakarta’s broader push to improve living standards and build a more competitive workforce. It complements the city’s existing Jakarta Student Excellence Card (KJMU), which supports undergraduate studies for students from low-income households within Indonesia.

Under the new scheme, scholarships will be awarded to high-achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with the aim of enhancing global competitiveness and improving the quality of Jakarta’s human resources.

Pramono said the city opted to collaborate with LPDP rather than establish a standalone program due to the lengthy administrative process required to set up a new scholarship fund.

“Through this collaboration, implementation can be accelerated, particularly on the administrative side,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for Jakarta students to study abroad through the Jakarta LPDP program.”

Technical aspects of the program, including university placements and fields of study, will be managed by the Jakarta administration.

Recipients will be required to return to Indonesia after completing their studies and contribute to public service, either through government institutions or region-owned enterprises.

The program is expected to send at least 100 students overseas in its initial phase.
