Jakarta Governor Says Civil Servants Can Stay Up for World Cup Final
Jakarta.Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has no objection to city civil servants staying up late to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, provided they still report for duty and maintain public services the following day.
The World Cup final between defending champions Argentina and Spain kicks off early Monday morning Indonesia time, just hours before government offices open.
"If Jakarta civil servants want to watch, please go ahead," Pramono told reporters on Friday.
"The important thing is that their work doesn't suffer, even though the match is in the early hours. That includes those planning to attend the public viewing at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS). I think that's perfectly fine."
The governor said the championship match promises to be one of the tournament's most compelling, highlighting the showdown between Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

'Nothing Was Handed to Us,' Says MessiPramono also referred to the widely shared story of a young Yamal being photographed with Messi as a baby during a charity calendar shoot years ago.
"There's that story about Yamal, who was once bathed by Messi. It makes this final even more epic. So if civil servants want to watch it, that's absolutely fine," he said.
Pramono also revealed where his own support lies.
He is backing Argentina after being impressed by the team's dramatic semifinal victory over England, particularly Messi's performance in the closing minutes.
"Everyone saw Argentina against England. Those last seven minutes were extraordinary," he said.
"In the past there was the 'Hand of God.' Now there are Messi's feet, with two assists that led to goals. It was incredible."
The 2026 World Cup final pits two of the tournament's standout teams against each other. Argentina are seeking to defend the title they won four years ago, while Spain are chasing their second World Cup crown after lifting the trophy in 2010.
