Denpasar. Indonesian police have arrested a 25-year-old Singaporean man on suspicion of murdering his Indonesian girlfriend at a boarding house in Denpasar, Bali, after the victim's family discovered her body several days after the alleged killing.

The suspect, identified by his initials MZ, was arrested on Wednesday night, about three hours after police received a report of the incident. He was apprehended near the Ngurah Rai Bypass in Sanur while allegedly attempting to flee, authorities said.

The victim, identified as AS, 25, was from Tegal, Central Java.

According to police, the victim's body was discovered at a rented room in South Denpasar after her younger sibling became concerned when repeated phone calls went unanswered.

Upon arriving at the boarding house, the sibling noticed a strong odor coming from the property. After entering the victim's room, the sibling found the body partially covered with a doll and a carpet.

The suspect, who was staying in the room next door, reportedly emerged while the sibling was at the scene but did not respond when asked about the victim's whereabouts. Becoming suspicious, the sibling allegedly struck him with a motorcycle helmet before the suspect fled on a motorcycle.

A joint team from the Bali Police's Criminal Investigation Directorate, Denpasar Police, and South Denpasar Police launched a manhunt and arrested the suspect later that evening.

Police have not publicly disclosed a motive for the alleged killing, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Neighbors said the couple had appeared friendly and occasionally greeted residents. The boarding house was generally quiet because most tenants were away during the day.

One neighbor, who had lived next door for about four months, said the last unusual activity he noticed was a birthday gathering at the victim's room on Saturday, when he heard laughter and conversations until around 1 a.m.

"I was surprised to see so many police officers and traditional security personnel because it's usually quiet here," the neighbor said. "I later learned that a murder had taken place in the room next door."

He said both the suspect and the victim had always been polite. The victim was often seen taking care of her pet cats, while the suspect had greeted him on several occasions.

The neighbor added that he never noticed a foul smell or heard any screams from the victim's room before the body was discovered.

Police have secured the crime scene, where some of the victim's belongings remained scattered outside the boarding house following the investigation.

The suspect is being held at Denpasar Police headquarters for further questioning.
