Indonesian Players Promised Bonuses if They Draw with Argentina
Jakarta. In a bid to motivate players, Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir on Saturday promised financial bonuses if they can hold Argentina in a historic match where the country will play against reigning world champions for the first time ever.
“A draw will yield bonuses, let alone if we can win – the bonuses will be extra-ordinary,” Erick said at the Senayan sporting complex in Jakarta.
"It will be the first time for them to get bonuses from a draw. How cool is that?”
Erick, who is also the state-owned enterprise minister, reminded all players that the match on Monday is a great deal for Indonesian football.
“It’s a serious game. If I’m not mistaken, a win will add 9.5 points and a draw will give us 4.5 points that will boost Indonesia’s FIFA world ranking," Erick added.
“I want our players to fight and show their best in front of the home crowd.”
The Argentinian team, who arrived Friday evening on a flight from Beijing, will not play football superstars Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria but on paper, the world’s number one will have no problem defeating the home team, currently ranked 149th.
In another friendly earlier this week, Indonesia played a goalless match against Palestine.
