Indonesia Awaits Decision on Venue for Inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup
Jakarta. Indonesia is awaiting FIFA's decision on the venue for the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, after the country's football association formally submitted its bid, PSSI chairman Erick Thohir said on Tuesday.
Erick said Indonesia had formally expressed its readiness to stage the competition, which is expected to become FIFA's premier tournament for Southeast Asian national teams.
"We're waiting for FIFA's decision, but of course we would be delighted if Indonesia is selected because it would bring a major football event to the country," Erick said.
He said Hong Kong was also under consideration to host the tournament.
According to Erick, FIFA is seeking to strengthen the standard of competition in East and Southeast Asia following similar regional initiatives, including the FIFA Arab Cup.
"The main objective is to improve the quality and competitiveness of Asian national teams ahead of future FIFA World Cups," he said.
Erick added that the Indonesian government had fully backed the country's bid, with President Prabowo Subianto sending a letter of support to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
He said FIFA was expected to announce its decision within the next one to two weeks. If Indonesia is selected, the tournament is likely to be held between September and October 2026.
