Indonesia Seeks to Host 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has backed Indonesia's bid to host the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the government preparing to submit a formal proposal to FIFA.
Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said Friday that Prabowo had given his full support to Indonesia's candidacy during a meeting at the president's private residence in Hambalang, Bogor. The meeting was also attended by Indonesia national team head coach John Herdman.
"I reported that FIFA has given a positive response regarding Indonesia becoming one of the hosts of the FIFA ASEAN Cup in September-October this year," Erick told reporters after the meeting.
According to Erick, Prabowo plans to send an official letter to FIFA to strengthen Indonesia's bid and demonstrate the government's commitment to hosting the tournament.
"The president supports the proposal and will prepare a letter so that Indonesia can be selected by FIFA as host. Now we await the decision," he said.
Indonesia has stepped up efforts in recent years to establish itself as a major destination for international football events, following the successful hosting of several FIFA tournaments and youth competitions. The country is also pursuing broader ambitions to raise the profile of its national team and football infrastructure.
Erick, who also serves as chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), said Prabowo had instructed him to coordinate with multiple ministries because hosting a FIFA-sanctioned tournament requires extensive government support.
He noted that preparations would involve approvals and coordination across a range of sectors, including taxation, healthcare, security, transportation, and immigration.
"For a FIFA tournament like this, support from various ministries is essential, including the Finance Ministry on tax matters, the Health Ministry on medical services, and many other institutions," Erick said.
He expressed optimism that Indonesia would ultimately secure hosting rights and said FIFA's final decision could be announced within the coming weeks.
"I am confident we have a good opportunity," Erick said.
The meeting also focused on the long-term development of Indonesian football. Herdman said the commitment shown by President Prabowo sends a strong message to players and supporters alike.
According to Herdman, the enthusiasm and support demonstrated by national leaders can play an important role in strengthening the team's confidence and ambitions.
The Canadian-born coach reiterated his long-term objective of guiding Indonesia to its first FIFA World Cup appearance since independence by qualifying for the 2030 tournament.
"That dream can only be achieved with the support of all Indonesians," Herdman said.
Indonesia has made significant strides in recent years, climbing the FIFA rankings to 118th place and strengthening its squad through a combination of domestic talent development and naturalized players. Hosting major international competitions is viewed as part of the country's broader strategy to accelerate football development and build momentum toward future World Cup qualification.
