Indonesia Secures Historic Spot in Asian Cup Last 16
Jakarta. Indonesia has etched its name in Asian Cup history by clinching a spot in the last 16 by virtue of a crucial 1-1 draw in the Group F match between Kirgizstan and Oman on Thursday.
The result not only eliminated Oman from the competition but also propelled Indonesia to become one of the four best third-placed teams in the group stage, securing a narrow qualification for the knockout round.
This marks a historic achievement for Indonesia, as it is the first time the national team has progressed beyond the group stage since its inaugural participation in the tournament.
"Praise be to God! The national team has just made history by reaching the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup. It's not over yet, so let's give our best to bring Garuda to the world stage," Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir wrote on Instagram.
The Garuda team is set to face group B leader Australia on Sunday in their quest to reach the quarterfinals for the first time ever.
Southeast Asian neighbor Thailand has also secured a spot in the last 16 by finishing second in Group F and is scheduled to face Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
With three points from Group D, Indonesia ranked last among the four best third-placed teams, trailing behind Jordan, Palestine, and Syria.
The team's sole victory, a 1-0 win courtesy of a penalty against Vietnam, marked Indonesia's first Asian Cup victory since 2007 when they defeated Bahrain.
Indonesia faced defeats against Japan and Iraq in other Group D matches in Qatar, losing 1-3 in both encounters.
The upcoming round of 16 fixtures are as follows:
Sunday, Jan. 28
- Indonesia vs Australia
- Tajikistan vs United Arab Emirates
Monday, Jan. 29
- Iraq vs Jordan
- Qatar vs Palestine
Tuesday, Jan. 30
