Jakarta. The government is planning to ask influencers to help President-Elect Prabowo Subianto’s signature free meal program, according to Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi.

Prabowo intends to introduce free school lunch nationwide to improve the population’s nutritional adequacy as Indonesia tries to lower the stunting rate. Pilot distribution of the meals have already started, although the actual program is set to officially start in January. Prabowo will already be president by then. Preparations are underway to make sure that everything goes according to plan.

The government is also trying to come up with the best possible way to inform the public on why it is important to feed kids free lunches. As a large part of the population is active social media users, influencers might help convince people that the ambitious free meal program could actually be beneficial.

“So [on involving influencers], yes. It is sort of like that. But we will see what the best possible method could be,” Budi Arie said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Budi said the government would also use every channel and platform to campaign the free meal initiative. He added: “So people can know how important this program is.”

The Communications Ministry has earned an additional budget worth Rp 10 billion (around $648,971) to promote Prabowo’s free meal program throughout next year alone.
